Running For Office

I'm not the most political person.  I wasn't able to watch the presidential debates and I don't feel like I missed out on much.  Truth be told, I'm not impressed with either candidate.

I know that I should be more enthusiastic about the upcoming election.  My freedom to vote is a precious privilege that I tend to take for granted.  Nevertheless, I feel like the role of Commander in Chief should be held by a person that can actually handle all the facets involved in leading our country.  That means he should be a good businessman with strong moral values.  He needs to be just and peace-seeking.  He should have social grace paired with unwavering convictions.  He needs to have foresight and the ability to think quick on his feet.  He must be honest and trustworthy.  He should...

The list is endless.  This is a lot to impose on one man, especially since Jesus, himself, is not running for office.  To pin our hopes and dreams on one mortal man will only leave us feeling disappointed.  This is not to say that we should ignore our civic duty to vote our conscience.  I'm just saying that we need to know that our true leader oversees the entire universe, not just a measly country.  Come November, we will elect a simple Caesar... but the position of Sovereign Lord has already been filled.

Read the following very carefully.  It's a good reminder to us about who is really in charge.

Rom 13:1-7  Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.  For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.  This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing.
